In conjunction with the construction of the new A55 roadway through Colwyn Bay the railway station frontage was reconstructed on the formation of the Down Loop line (Platform 4) formerly Down Slow until September 1968. From 14th September 1980 the Down Loop was shortened and converted to a siding to enable contractors to start on the station. The booking office and staff facilities was relocated temporarily on the down platform including the station access point. Work on the station started in March 1981 and continued till April 1982. The official opening was carried out by the Mayoress of Colwyn Bay on 6th May 1982.
