The yard here was busy up till the end of shunting in 1984 when the line to Brymbo closed. It wasn't unusual to see wagons loose shunted at the top end of the yard as all lines from approx. centre of the yard climbed up pass Croes Newydd West signalbox. ]]> Tue Sep 22 2009 DOLGARROG RAILWAY http://alanroberts771.fotopic.net/c1748678.html In 1916 the Company finally opened a short standard gauge line, leaving the LNWR Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog railway at a point just over ½ mile south east of the aluminium works at Dolgarrog. Interchange sidings were provided here, connected to a loop on the LNWR line. From this point the works line turned through 90 degrees on a sharp curve which climbed steeply to an impressive girder bridge over the River Conwy. Leaving the bridge the curve continued as the line descended to the level of the surrounding land. Having gone through an almost 180 degree turn the railway then ran in an absolutely straight line to the Works. Outside the works entrance was a run round loop and a branch along Clark Street to the foot of the incline and a coal yard. The system seems to have been operated on an as required basis, with one engine in steam and the other as spare. Ten 12 ton wagons were acquired at the time the line opened for business but it is not known if these operated over the main line. Shortly after opening for goods traffic, the company decided to operate a passenger service for the benefit of its employees. A basic platform constructed of timber was provided by the LNWR from where passengers had to walk across a level crossing to join the Company train at its own low platform. There was a further platform just outside the works entrance. This must have been a haphazard operation, as only the ‘blue collar’ workers were conveyed by train, this connecting with the early morning Conwy Valley train; the office staff had to walk! To operate the service the Company acquired two second hand coaches, a bogie coach and a four wheeler. Little appears to be known about the bogie vehicle but the four wheeler came from the North London Railway and the builders plate survives today in the Conwy Valley Railway Museum. The passenger service was withdrawn about 1932 but the coaches found further use as changing rooms for the works swimming pool and sports facilities. Goods traffic continued and reached a peak during the war years but declined in the 1950s, and by 1960 the line saw little use, and the system finally closed. It was eventually lifted during 1963-64. The Dolgarrog Railway Society are hoping to reopen part of the line from the site of the Aluminium Works (now closed and demolished) and the Dolgarrog side of the river bridge. At one time a signalbox existed here during the time towards the 1900's when the main line was widened , i.e. slow lines put in. Following the completion of the work the box became redundant and was moved to Talacre by "train" to work the new layout there. Nowadays the crossing is used mainly by horses from the nearby riding schools and a small residential area on the beach side of the crossing. From 14th September 1980 the Down Loop was shortened and converted to a siding to enable contractors to start on the station. The booking office and staff facilities was relocated temporarily on the down platform including the station access point. Work on the station started in March 1981 and continued till April 1982. The official opening was carried out by the Mayoress of Colwyn Bay on 6th May 1982. A very busy box at one time which included a busy goods yard and ab engine shed (closed 1963). Also holiday excursions terminated here and coaching stock stabled in the through sidings. Two bays were located on the down side for the Vale of Clwyd trains and a bay platform on the up side for other trains such as the "Welsh Dragon" shuttle to and from Llandudno. The box was built to a design like many others at the time on the Chester & Holyhead Railway. The box controlled connections to three stone quarries. Kneeshaw Lupton sidings were located to the east of the box and was the site of the shunting error that took place leading to the Abergele rail accident, the sidings closed in 1976. The sidings opposite the box fed stone traffic from Raynes Quarry, the sidings fell to disuse in the early 1970's and were clipped out of use. A connection to Penmaenrhos Quarry off the up main on the west side of the box lasted till 1967. From the mid 1970's the box opened on early turn only to split the block section between Abergele and Colwyn Bay and the commencement of the A55 road construction in 1981 had the box open from 0600 - 1800. It lasted till the 18th December 1983 when the box was abolished and the area of control was transferred to Colwyn Bay signalbox. ]]> Sat Apr 4 2009 "MARGA" aground off Rhos-on-Sea http://alanroberts771.fotopic.net/c1671014.html On a rough night off Colwyn Bay on the 29th September 1991 a coaster ran aground and ended up on the sea front of nearby Rhos-on-Sea. The Cortes registered coaster "MARGA" (ex-Margit) was on a voyage from Belfast to Llanddulas to load stone. The vessel broke its moorings while anchored 2 miles out and ended up on the beach damaging a slipway. Marga was stuck for a further 2 days until enough high water and assistance with tugs. She suffered damage to her astern end and ended up in a dry dock at Birkenhead for inspection. During that time of the year it was also an added attraction for tourist. Llanrwst is the only remaining passing loop on the whole line, before 1966 loops existed at Tal-y-Cafn, Betws-y-Coed and Dolwyddelan. From 1966 Tal-y-Cafn was resignalled and a new 5 lever GF was commissioned on the down platform controlling a distant signal each way and a gate lock. On the 29th April 1993 an incident happened at Tal-y-Cafn when a passenger train ploughed through the gates. From that day the signalling was disconnected and the GF on the platform was taken out of use. New reflectorised distant boards replaced the semaphore distant signals on the 11th August 1996. At Llanrwst the distant signals were replaced by reflectorised distant boards in June 1989. Wednesday 18 February 2009: Enclosed are photos of the remaining signalling left on the Conwy Valley line. Llandudno Junction once boasted three signalbox ; No1 which was located at the east end on the down side had 101 levers (A+B + 1 - 99) closed on the 26th May 1968. No2 box was renamed LLANDUDNO JUNCTION following the closure of No1 box. The box was located on the west side of Llandudno Junction station and had a frame of 154 levers (A + 1 - 153). Levers A + 1 -45 were removed following the closure of No1 box. The box survived until the 10th February 1985 when the new and present box opened. Llandudno Junction Crossing SB was a stone throw away from No2 box and controlled a busy level crossing with the former A55 road. A new flyover bridge was opened in 1969 and replaced the level crossing. The box had a frame of 10 levers and closed on the 8th June 1969.
